This spot of beauty has great meaning for those with eyes to see.
At one time, it was a seed and some dirt. From this common beginning the miraculous emerged.
The design of the flower was a hidden code in the seed. The ingredients for the flower, it’s color, texture, and smell was hidden in the soil.
And then…
The seed merged with the soil,
that design took on those ingredients,
this miracle began.
Common dirt was transformed into a beautiful rose. More precisely, some elements of the dirt were extracted, put through a process, and refashioned into the flower.
Red was found in brown.
A pleasing fragrance was removed from an earthy smell.
Velvety softness was coaxed from grainy roughness.
Beauty pulled from dirt.
I know about DNA and chemical processes, laws of physics and light refraction. But this knowledge does not explain the mystery of this miracle.
A dead seed in lifeless soil will sit for centuries, or simply rot away.
But a seed with life, dormant of course, but life nonetheless, that is the source of the miracle. One small bit of life transforms the lifeless into a bounty of living beauty.
It is so miraculous that Jesus used this process to explain faith. A seed in good soil will bring forth a harvest.
He wasn’t talking about plants. He was explaining that God’s word is alive, a living seed. When it is received into a spiritually dead heart, that small bit of life can transform the lifeless into beauty.
That seed extracts the elements of your sinful life, puts them through a process, and refashions them into a life of righteousness. The word of God is a seed that defies the laws of man to trigger a miracle in human hearts.
This miracle is available to you. Beauty or dirt, the choice is yours.
